First snowfall of the season could drop 4 inches in North Jersey on Saturday

Some snow is in the forecast for North Jersey today.

The first snowfall of the season in North Jersey could leave up to 4 inches in the area Saturday.

While Friday and Sunday look dry, Saturday could see snow starting in the early morning, meteorologist Tim Morrin of the National Weather Service said.

"I would say the bulk of it will be anywhere from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., maybe a little bit later," meteorologist Jim Connolly of the National Weather Service said.

The increase in inches from 1 to 3 to 4 was due to the "inland movement of the precipitation shield," Morrin said.

High temperatures will range from the low to mid-30s but meteorologist Joe Pollina predicted snow rather than a mixture of rain.

Morrin cautioned those on the road to take it slow as there may be pockets of iciness from the low temperatures and wet conditions. Visibility will be reduced and the snow will be light but continue for a number of hours.

The snow should stop falling by midnight.

"It's not one of those major storms but it's not one to take lightly," Morrin said.

Several towns in North Jersey such as Lodi, Wayne, Oradell, Verona, Garfield, Rutherford, Teaneck, Emerson, Wayne, Hillsdale and Norwood issued winter weather advisories for Saturday.

No precipitation was predicted for Sunday, with high temperatures around the same as Saturday or possibly slightly warmer, Pollina said.

Although North Jersey has had some cold days and nights as the official start of winter approaches, Saturday could be the first snow accumulation for the region.

Snow could return Monday night into Tuesday but Pollina gave that a 30 to 40 percent chance as of Thursday evening.

"We’ll fine-tune that as we get closer to the event," he said.
