Assignment for New Milford students is a piece of cake

New Jersey never looked so tasty as it did at a New Milford elementary school Tuesday.

Fourth-graders at B.F. Gibbs Elementary School spent the tail end of the school year on a culinary class assignment. Each student was assigned a county in New Jersey and had to bake a cake with that county's theme.

On Tuesday all of the cakes from the three classes were brought together to form the three state-shaped desserts.

"These kids worked so hard the last week of school," said Jill Fried-McCarthy, a parent of one of the young bakers and substitute teacher at the school.

Some of the county decorations included Turtle Back Zoo in Essex, Rutgers University in Middlesex and Monmouth Racetrack.

Even with some advanced designs, the cakes were fully edible with multiple flavors.

"Some kids used all icing, some used fondant, some used marshmallows on top," Fried-McCarthy said. "It was so cool to see how they let their imaginations take over."

Parents were invited to come for the taste of New Jersey at the school.
