Former Bergen Catholic wrestler Johnny Sebastian transfers to Wisconsin

Johnny Sebastian is back in red.

The three-time NJSIAA champion from Bergen Catholic will wrestle one final college season for Wisconsin, he announced Thursday night on Twitter.

Sebastian spent the last five years at Northwestern, qualifying for the NCAA Championships twice. He struggled with injuries last season and did not compete competing in the postseason, then sought a medical redshirt to wrestle a sixth season.

Sebastian, who has primarily wrestled at 174 pounds but did spend some time at 165 pounds in 2017, could fit right into the Badgers' lineup at 174 to replace Ryan Christensen.

Christensen went 1-2 at the NCAA Championships in March.

It's likely a better lineup fit for Sebastian than Rutgers, where he could have come back to New Jersey and joined several former Bergen Catholic teammates.

The Scarlet Knights have a crowded lineup at the middle and upper weights. Most notably, Joe Grello – a former Crusader – won two matches at the NCAA Championships at 174 pounds as a sophomore in March.

Another one of Sebastian's former teammates, Jordan Pagano, was granted a sixth year after missing most of the 2018-19 season. Pagano, who has wrestled from 165 to 184 for the Scarlet Knights, was an NCAA qualifier in 2017.
