No one was injured in a Labor Day fire in New Milford started by gasoline from a fire pit in a Cherry Street backyard.

Firefighters respond to a blaze in New Milford on Sept. 4, 2017.

The fire that displaced two people started around 8 p.m., according to New Milford Fire Chief Ross Rhein. The fire spread to the attic and basement of the two-and-a-half story home by the time fire officials arrived, Rhein said.

The fire was knocked down "relatively quickly," he continued.

"There’s some significant damage in the rear," Rhein said. "May be a couple of weeks before the family gets back in there."

The Oradell, River Edge and Bergenfield fire departments responded with New Milford to the fire with one engine from Dumont on standby.
