Ramsey police arrested a Mahwah resident twice in one day after he was found drunk in his car and attempted to pick his car up from the police station while still under the influence, authorities said.

Richard B. Haskell, 71, was found by police on Saturday, Sept. 23 around 7:42 a.m. after police received a complaint that an unresponsive person was in a car at Suraci's Pond, according to a press release from Chief Bryan Gurney. Sgt. Timothy Shoemaker woke Haskell and was able to smell the odor of alcohol on his breath and saw a clear bottle between his legs filled with alcohol.

Shoemaker gave Haskell a field sobriety test and charged him with driving while intoxicated and having an open container in the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle. Haskell's blood alcohol level was found to be .21 percent and he was later released.

Later that afternoon at 12:21 p.m., police said Haskell drove to the police department to see if his car from the earlier arrest would be released. According to the release, the test performed on Haskell indicated he still was over the legal limit to drive a car. After police performed the second field sobriety test, they arrested him again. His blood alcohol level at that time was recorded as .14 percent.

He was charged with a second count of driving while intoxicated and is expected to appear Oct. 24 in Ramsey Municipal Court.
