Two pedestrians struck within 24 hours in Verona

Two pedestrians were struck within 24 hours in Verona with both being sent to the hospital, and one driver arrested after leaving the scene.

About 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 1, a landscaper was hit on Lakeview Place, according to Verona Police Capt. Stephen DePoe. He was hospitalized with a leg injury, and DePoe said he had not determined if the driver would be issued a summons.

About 7:30 the night before, a cyclist was hit by a black truck on Fairview Avenue near the Verona High School. The driver left the scene of the accident, but was found shortly after and arrested, DePoe said.

The cyclist, a 51-year-old man, was transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for neck and back injuries, the captain said. The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to DePoe.

Charges were pending in the incident and DePoe declined to release information about the driver.
