RIDGEWOOD — Smoke from a science experiment led to the evacuation of Ridgewood High School on Thursday morning. The smoke was part of the experiment, but not everyone knew about it.

One of the science classes was burning ice pop sticks at about 9:40 a.m., Fire Capt. Greg Hillerman said. Someone walking by in the hallway detected a smoke odor and, not realizing it was part of a class, pulled the fire alarm, Hillerman said.

“Nothing went awry with the experiment,” the captain said. “It was expected, but the other people in the hallway didn’t realize there was an experiment going on.”

The Fire Department investigated and the building was evacuated for around 40 minutes, Hillerman said.

No one was injured. A message left for Ridgewood Superintendent Dr. Daniel Fishbein did not draw a response.
