Three Maywood apartments 'uninhabitable' after fire
Police were the first to arrive at the Hammel Gardens Apartments when a fire broke out at 5:54 p.m. Thursday, said Maywood Fire Chief Chris Tuttle.
They were joined by fire departments from Saddle Brook, Hackensack, Roselle Park and Maywood.
There were no injuries, said Tuttle. But three out of the 12 apartments in the complex were rendered "uninhabitable for the night," Tuttle said.
The fire primarily took place in one second-floor apartment. Flames also made their way into its attic.

Three engines and three ladder trucks made quick work of the fire.
"We had it knocked down in about 15 minutes," Tuttle said. "The attic took a little more time."
Tuttle said the second-story apartment next door to the fire had damage because firefighters had to "open the walls and ceiling to check for fire damage." The one below it suffered water damage.
